The main part of this project is a sand dressed pitch which is not floodlit because of the proximity to Hampton Court Palace. The pitch is sand dressed to FIH National Standards and a practice area of approximately 1000m2 was also constructed in the area between this pitch and an existing pitch.

The pitch will be played on by the School and also Old Kingstonians Hockey Club and Surbiton Hockey Club.

The project also included the conversion of an existing pitch to 8 Tennis and Netball Courts in macadam, the construction of a 6 bay cricket net system to ECB Standards and a polymeric long jump facility.

The scheme development required a Flood Risk Assessment because the pitch is immediately adjacent to the Thames and in a flood risk zone. The pitch level was established so as not to raise ground levels, which resulted in a large amount of material going off-site.

An Arboricultural report was commissioned and the Local Authority tree officer was satisfied by the proposed tree and root protection measures. There were a number of “stakeholder” restrictions including some cricket matches, car parking for a Hampton Court Event and others involving school events.

The scheme was developed from an initially costed feasibility study and planning permission obtained for the preferred option. Although some additional items were instructed, the original scheme costs were very close to the outcome costs.

All of these works, with a contract value of approximately £920,000, were constructed to a nine week programme to fit with the window available straddling the School Summer Holidays.
